Mechanic’s Institute Library & Chess Club (Embarcadero)

Financial District

57 Post Street
San Francisco CA
P: (415) 393-0101

The Mechanics’ Institute building houses the oldest library on the West Coast and one of the oldest chess clubs in the United States. It was organized in 1854 when San Francisco was a frontier community far removed from anywhere by a small group of citizens as a center for adult technical education.

Each month, the Library adds some 300 new books, videotapes and audiocassettes to the collections. There is noteworthy strength in the following areas: literature, fine arts, social sciences, applied sciences, biography, business and finance, philosophy, and history.

Many members describe the Library as “an oasis amidst the crowded jungle of the San Francisco Financial District.”

Tea at the Ritz Carlton

Nob Hill

600 Stockton Street
San Francisco CA
P: 415.296.7465

There are many places to have high tea in town (two of the most beautiful are the Neiman-Marcus Rotunda, the Sheraton Palace Belle Epoque room), but no place is swankier than the Ritz. Lavish collections of delicacies are included in the Full Tea and teddy bears are served to children during the holiday season.

Hang Art Gallery – Union Square

556 Sutter Street
San Francisco CA
P: 415.434.4264

Many art galleries are expensive and haughty. Hang (and its Annex across the street) are exactly the opposite. They specialize in emerging Bay Area artists, offering work that’s very well priced (even available for rent if you don’t like the art in your hotel room), and have a really welcoming attitude. Highly recommended for those who enjoy contemporary art.

Baker Beach

Gibson Road
Z: 94129

While Ocean Beach attracts the tourists, locals know that this beach is more wind-protected and has a stunning view of the Golden Gate Bridge. You may see a sizable collection of nudists, so this may be a “family beware” beach. Drive through the majestic Presidio to get here and descend the stairs just off Lincoln Boulevard.

Japanese Tea Garden Golden Gate Park

Tea Garden Drive in Golden Gate Park
San Francisco CA
P: 415.668.0909

Drizzly days can be the best time to explore the beautiful Japanese Tea Gardens in Golden Gate Park. The gardens are at their least crowded on these damp days, and the moisture helps bring the fragrance of the exotic plantings to life. Duck under the shelter of the teahouse for a warming cup of jasmine tea and some sweet cookies.

Ocean Beach – San Francisco

Great Highway and Fulton Street
San Francisco CA

If you came to San Francisco to experience “beach culture”, you’re about 400 miles too far to the north, but Ocean Beach has a little bit of that So. Cal. flavor albeit with more chill in the air (add a handful of fog and wind and you’ve got yourself a romantic hand-in-hand walk down the beach). You’ll see surfers in wet suits, all kinds of dog breeds with their associated diverse people breeds, and bonfires at nighttime. The Beach Chalet (100 Great Highway) 415 386-8439 restaurant has pretty good food and provides a nice view for sunset (if you’re not up for the more gaudy and touristy Cliff House up the hill). Drive all the way west through Golden Gate Park to the Great Highway.
