Best of Bay Area’s Teen Adventure
Fall 2008
Byron, Best of Bay Area
As a teenager, I enjoyed go cart racing at a few tracks. As an Adult, I graduated onto Malibu Grand Prix where I competed against family members. Then I experienced GoKart Racer in Burlingame. While there were similarities to Malibu Grand Prix, nothing compares to actually racing against others on the track.

Address: 2500 Stanely Blvd.
City: Pleasanton
Phone: 925.829.6230
From Website: A haven for swimming and fishing can be found at Shadow Cliffs, only a mile from downtown Pleasanton on Stanley Boulevard.
Shadow Cliffs, formerly a gravel quarry, was donated to the Park District by Kaiser Industries, and its assessed value of $250,000 was used to obtain a matching grant for development of the park from the U.S. Bureau of Outdoor Recreation.
With this start, the Park District has developed a 296-acre park including an 80-acre lake and a four-flume waterslide, with ample parking and picnic grounds. There are facilities for the disabled.
The swimming beach has a bathhouse and refreshment stand, open on weekends in spring and fall, and daily during summer months.
Lifeguards are on duty only during the summer months, but swimming is allowed throughout the year in the designated area, at the swimmer’s own risk.

Build Your Own Fantasy World
Activity/Event/Show Reviewed: Kids Activity
Address: Berkeley Marina, on University Ave., exit off I-80
City: Berkeley
Summary: The name says it all, this is not your average playground! Kids have access to paint, hammers, nails, saws and wood, to design and create their very own play structures. Come ride the zip line, climb on the many kid designed and built forts, boats and towers, or build your own. This innovative playground is free if children and adults come together. Groups need to make advanced reservations. Adventure Playground is designed mainly for children 6 and up, but younger kids can go play if they are supervised by an adult. Parents must come with their kids to the park but once they sign in parents are free to go and kids over 6 are free to play for three hours. During the summer there are also programs offered by the Adventure Playground staff that parents’ can sign kids up for allowing them to stay for more than three hours without parental supervision. The only drawback to this playground is that once your kids arrive it’s close to impossible to get them to leave. Be sure to wear play clothes such as sturdy pants and clothes that can get messy.

We started as a small home business founded by Andrea Grossman, a graphic designer who worked from her dining room table. Now we have 160 employees and print more than 15,000 miles of stickers a year – enough to go half way around the globe!
We currently manufacture more than 700 different stickers and add new designs all the time. Our printing presses run 24 hours a day, five days a week, in our pristine 110,000 square foot corporate headquarters and printing plant just 40 miles north of San Francisco. We’re right on a protected wildlife preserve brimming with birds of all kinds.

Tom’s Cookies, Inc.
Activity/Event/Show Reviewed: Fun Activity
Address: 170 O’ Farrell Street
City: San Francisco
Phone: 925-373-3230
Approximate Duration:
Costs Involved:
Summary: Tom Roach, a native San Franciscan, opened Tom’s Cookies of San Francisco in 1990. At that time, his tiny 280 sq foot retail baker featured only a 1/2 a dozen types of cookies. Today Tom’s Cookies bakes up 60 different kinds of signature cookies, plus seasonal and holiday specialties, brownies, scones, muffins, and miniature cakes.
In 1993 Tom’s Cookies was the only product selected by then President Clinton to be served at all twelve inaugural balls. Per President Clinton’s request Tom came up with The Clinton Cookie (peanut butter banana). Soon after (thanks to the international media attention as well as an incredible product) Tom’s Cookies quickly outgrew the first shop. In October of 1993, the bakery moved into Macy’s flagship store on Union Square where Tom operates a bustling retail bakeship located in the cellar. Again in 1997 Tom’s Cookies was the only food product and outside vendor invited back to participate in President Clinton’s second inauguration.
Perhaps a fun activity for the whole family to stop by and sample some cookies named after a President.
