Fall has arrived and this is by far my favorite time of
year here on the central coast.  It is: by all means the start of our summer
weather.  The fog that hugs the coastline during the months of June, July and
August disappears and the sun starts to shine. This past summer was especially
damp and foggy so it’s nice to feel the warmth of the sun again.  The stars have
been twinkling in the sky the past few evenings! I almost forgot what they
looked like! This is a great time to visit Carmel and Monterey. The first two
weeks in October are filled with many fun events. It’s the perfect excuse to get
away for a day or two and immerse yourself in the artistic culture of
Carmel-by-the-Sea. Heck, you might even find the inner artist in you! Here are
three great events to whet your appetite (no pun intended).

October 6th
The 23rd Annual Taste of
Carmel
www.tasteofcarmel.org
I
attended this event last year and it was fabulous! First of all the setting for
the event is spectacular! It’s held in the courtyard at the historic Carmel
Mission. It’s decorated with hundreds of strands of lights that illuminate the
courtyard for an evening of (dare I say) gluttony! Last year I ate and drank
until I couldn’t possibly taste another bite or drink another sip of wine. This
year there will be 30 local restaurants and 20 wineries to keep everyone happy.
Honestly, the chefs really go out of their way to impress the crowd at this
venue. After all… it is the taste of Carmel. There will also be great music to
dance to under the stars. It’s just great
fun.

October 7th, 8th, 9th
Tor House & Hawk Tower/
Robinson Jeffers Foundation Fall Festival
www.torhouse.org

This festival is close to my heart since I have been a
volunteer at Tor House for the past three years. I love Tor House. Robinson
Jeffers was one of the first bohemian poets to settle in Carmel in the early
1900’s. He built the first house on Carmel Point and that stone house still
stands today and is a monument to the artistic community that became
Carmel-by-the-Sea. If you love poetry, wine, food, classical music, Carmel beach
and the rich history of one of the most beautiful places on the planet; check
out the fall festival at Tor House. This is a three day event that has many
venues… many are free… but my favorite is the sunset celebration that takes
place at Tor House itself on Friday, Oct. 7th from 5 to 7 p.m.
There is
nothing like it.
Look for me. I’ll be the one pouring your glass of
wine.

Oct.12th to 16th
Carmel Art and film festival
carmelartandfilm.comThis will be the third year for this event and promises to be the best ever.
What better place to have a film festival than the home of movie icon Clint
Eastwood? This festival showcases the best of independent filmmakers,
contemporary art, music and photography. The exhibits will be set up all over
Carmel with a special “Art in the Park” on Sat. Oct.15th showcasing the rich
heritage of Carmel’s many talented artists. Devendorf Park is located at the top
of Ocean Ave. just as you enter the Village. Movie screenings will be at various
locations throughout the festival. My personal favorite location is the pristine
white beach at the foot of Ocean Ave. “Movies on the Beach” will be happening if
the weather permits. How much fun would that be!? There are over 40 films
submitted in this year’s festival so there should be something to please
everyone. The winner of the festival will receive the “Clint Eastwood filmmakers
Award.”
Now I have saved the most exciting news for last. Clint Eastwood’s
latest movie “J.Edgar” to be released nationwide in November will be premiered
on Oct.14th at the Sunset Cultural Center. The movie is about the life of J.
Edgar Hoover: the former head of the FBI and stars Leonardo DiCaprio. This is
pretty exciting to have an exclusive premiere of what promises to be another
blockbuster hit by one of the most beloved and talented directors of our
time.
